About the event
Join us for a weekend workshop focused on cultivating our skills in mycology. From ‘field to lab’, we’ll be focusing on in-field documentation and sampling. We will then take our studies to the lab, where we’ll get comfortable using the microscope as a tool and dive into the microscopic side of fungi. Finally, we will venture into molecular studies; how to sample for sequencing, to send off to a lab, and how to make sense of the information gathered. Though we do not expect attendees to ‘know’ much about fungi, we do want to emphasize that this is intended for those who are dedicated to honing their skills in documenting fungal diversity. That being said, we believe that joy and curiosity are at the heart of learning!  We will be surrounded by the beautiful Monongahela National Forest and working out of the laboratories at Davis and Elkins College. Our hope is to advance community science through education and outreach, to empower those who are curious, that we might better know, love, and protect the fungi of Appalachia. Come be a part!
It is recommended that you stay on campus, due to the early start and remote location. That said, accomodations are limited and rustic. The limited rooms will be shared, 2 to a room, for an additional cost. Please indicate your preferred roommate or roommate gender at checkout and we will do our best to accommodate requests. Many of us will be camping on site, camping is free! Please be prepared for the weather, though there are covered spaces for gathering.
Coffee and breakfast snacks will be provided, and we will cook up simple dinners for Friday and Saturday evenings (there are grills, feel free to bring food to share). But please pack your own lunches. More details will be emailed out closer to the event date.
